Lately, I have been ranting about the best shampoo and conditioner for colored hair. Well, the reason is that I use Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner in my hair. Recently though, I was at the beauty supply store and I made an impulse purchase (yes) and bought a different brand of hair care products.
This was by far the worst impulse thing I could have done. Even though it was a professional line my hair is compromised (to say the least) and the new hair products destroyed my hair. My ends got worse and my hair was just breaking off.
So this is my Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, review.
Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner

The Best Organic Shampoo and Conditioner
Let me first start by saying the fact that this amazing product line is organic is just a bonus. Personally, I never have chosen my hair care products based on the fact that they are organic. To take that one step further I tend to shy away from styling products that are organic because they do not work as well.
Having said that, this shampoo and conditioner is a god send to me. It truly does everything the manufacturer says that it does. It smoothes the hair, protects it and strengthens it.
How do I know? – Because I do every thing that you are not supposed to do to your hair and this shampoo and conditioner continues to work wonders on my hair.
Like I said, I made a mistake and bought a different product line and in just a few weeks my hair started falling apart. My ends started splitting and breaking.
This shampoo and conditioner does have natural oils in it and it is fragrant. If there is one downfall to this line it would be the aroma. I happen to love the minty, patchouli smell.
What are Sulfates?
Pureologys claim to fame is that they are sulfate-free, vegan and all organic. So what does this really mean?
“Sulfates” are a harsh detergent. They were very commonly used in hair care products back in the 1930s. Sulfates are very powerful, cheap and easy to get a hold of. Basically, they help lather your hair better. In the process though they lift the cuticle layer of the hair causing it to buckle and destroying your hair.
The two most common sulfates are:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
So the quick break down on Sulfates is as follows-
Sulfates help the shampoo to lather better on your hair. They strip your hair in the meantime, removing any natural oil in your hair and further destroying your hair’s cuticle layer.
If you want soft, smooth, shiny hair then a word to the wise make sure your cleansing products do not have these harsh chemicals in them.
After describing what sulfates do to your hair it really starts to make sense why Pureology doesn’t put them in their products. It also helps reason with the price if you ask me.
The results are in the formula. They use the best products and oils to make the best shampoo and conditioner. It helps your color not fade, your color will last longer from using this magical line. If you read my article I wrote on professional hair care products then you probably understand why it is such a big deal for your color to last. (Read the cost comparison)
Oh, no testing on animals too
Yep, as if this wondrous line could get anymore brownie points they manage to score more. No testing on animals and no animal byproducts. Thank God! I happen to feel strongly about this because I love animals and it would be heartbreaking to think my shampoo was responsible for animal cruelty. 🙁
This Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner will last you for a long time. In comparison to other brands if used properly it will out last your other brands by a month or even two.
So this brand is safer on your hair, works great for color-treated hair, organic, vegan and sulfate free. That alone is worth checking into it. Pureology doesn’t test on animals and has an anti-fade color complex which is a huge score for people who color their hair.
The downsides are that it is a little pricey and it uses aromatherapy and has a specific fragrant smell to it. If you really look at how much this shampoo and conditioner does, I really don’t think the price isn’t an issue. It will last longer and should prevent you from getting your color done more often. Doesn’t that sound like savings?
